What Are Veneers Made Of?

veneers Round Rock, TX

Dental veneers are a great way to fix issues with a patient’s smile due to minor concerns with their teeth. They are attractive, durable and do not involve an invasive application process. One of the more frequently asked questions dentists receive about veneers treatment is in regard to the type of material that is used. Veneers are typically made of either porcelain or composite resin material.

A review of the types of veneers

Porcelain and composite resin veneers are the two most common types, and each has its own advantages and potential drawbacks to consider. The following is an overview of how to choose between the two options to ensure that individuals get the type of veneers that meet their needs and preferences.

What are veneers?

Dental veneers are thin layers of tooth-colored material that are placed over the visible surface of a tooth to improve the appearance and protect it from oral health concerns. Each veneer is custom-crafted for the tooth on which it is placed. There are many reasons why a dentist may recommend veneers including to repair tooth damage, improve the shade of stained teeth and fix misshapen teeth.

Veneers most commonly are placed on the more visible teeth such as incisors and canines. There are two main types of material a dentist may use with dental veneers, which are porcelain and resin composite.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are often referred to as traditional veneers and they are the most common type. They are made using porcelain material, and each one is crafted to fit perfectly. One of the most notable differences between porcelain veneers and composite veneers is how they are applied. Porcelain veneers involve a more invasive process that involves removing a small amount of enamel. Since enamel is removed, the veneers are intended to be permanent. The good news is porcelain veneers are more durable, and they can last for more than ten years with proper care.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers consist of a resin composite material. They offer many of the same advantages as porcelain veneers, which includes the following:

  • They can improve the appearance of teeth
  • Provides teeth with a more desirable shade
  • Improves shape
  • Provides oral health protection

Composite veneers also do not involve as invasive of an application procedure. In some instances, the dentist does not need to remove any enamel, so the results may be reversible. The drawback of composite veneers is durability. They typically last between five to ten years and require more maintenance than porcelain veneers.

Discuss veneer options with a dentist

It is not always an easy decision choosing between porcelain and composite veneers. It is best not to make the decision alone but rather consult with a dentist about the pros and cons of each option.
